Following the release of their exam results in August, Shireland Collegiate Academy achieved a remarkable milestone by significantly closing the gap between its advantaged and disadvantaged students to just 0.02.
Disadvantaged students – those facing economic, social, or educational challenges -have historically lagged behind in academic outcomes due to factors such as limited access to resources, lower household income, and fewer educational opportunities, as highlighted by the Education Policy Institute.
Despite these challenges, the Academy’s latest data shows that disadvantaged students at the school performed almost on par with their peers, a notable accomplishment given the widening of the national attainment gap. In recent years, this gap has increased, growing from an average of 1.24 in 2017 to 1.34 in 2021 and further widening to 1.46 in 2023.
Against this backdrop, the Academy’s success in closing the gap reflects its commitment to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive, regardless of their background.
Moira Green, Principal at Shireland Collegiate Academy expressed pride in the students’ achievements, stating: “At Shireland, we believe in delivering an exceptional, inclusive education where every child is given every opportunity to achieve their very best.
“These results reflect the dedication and unwavering commitment of our staff, who have worked tirelessly to provide targeted support and ensure that every student has the resources and guidance they need to succeed.”
The Academy has implemented several key strategies to enhance learning and close the attainment gap. These included providing essential technology for online learning, encouraging participation in extracurricular activities, and motivating students to excel in local and national competitions. The Academy also offered weekly sessions led by subject specialists, targeted personal development programs and tailored careers guidance, including employer visits and opportunities to explore apprenticeships and visits to Russell Group universities.
Sir Mark Grundy, CEO of Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust, said: “As a Trust, we are incredibly proud of the school’s recent exam results, which demonstrates the impact of their innovative strategies to support our young learners.
“Moving forward, the Academy remains committed to maintaining this progress, ensuring that all students continue to benefit from the same level of support and opportunities to excel.”
