Reading At SCA

Curriculum

At Shireland Collegiate Academy, we believe that reading is critical to unlocking the curriculum, overcoming social disadvantage and broadening our student’s futures. We aim to:

  • Prioritise reading to allow our pupils to access our full curriculum offer
  • Encourage wider reading across all subject areas
  • Develop a love of books and reading
  • Develop our student’s interpretation and inference skills as lifelong skills

Encouraging Reading

Library

We are lucky enough to have two libraries at Shireland, one found in our purpose-built KS3 block and one found in our main block. Here, students can borrow books from every subject and beyond.

Renaissance myON Reader

Shireland students are encouraged to access digital books. Renaissance myON® Reader is a student-centered, personalized literacy environment that gives students access to more than 6,000 enhanced digital books. Titles are dynamically matched to each individual student’s interests, year and Lexile® reading level. Combined with a suite of close reading tools and embedded supports, myON Reader fosters student engagement and achievement.

First News

At KS3, our students are kept up to date with news events in the UK and around the world. At Shireland Collegiate Academy, we aim to help our students to build an interest in being informed. First News is not only engaging but ultimately helps in fuelling their curiosity and encouraging them to form their own opinions.

Recommended Reading

Our students are encouraged to read books from a wide range of subjects. Our Heads of subject have helpfully ordered lots of books that will soon be seen in our libraries that will excite and inspire!
