Proposal to change the length of the Academy Day from September 2021

Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust is consulting on a number of changes to the Academy Day from this September 2021. We believe that the changes will allow our Academies to better support the mental and physical health and wellbeing of students as well as creating opportunities to extend learning in a more tutorial style.

The proposal will see a continuation of the extended form time that has worked so successfully during the pandemic to support the delivery of PHSE and SRE in a supportive environment with their Form Tutor. We will also create a bespoke programme to enhance levels of student achievement and provide even greater opportunity to participate in the Arts and Sports in an extended day format on one day a week. For example, the extended hour will support the delivery of the qualifications in Year 10 whilst still supporting student achievement in other subject areas but not reduce the offer available to students to study at GCSE. We will offer an enhanced level of Arts and Sports activities in Key Stage 3.
Specifically, the changes at Shireland Collegiate Academy would be:
• We propose to extend the day by 1 hour on Tuesdays and an additional 15 minutes on the other four days of the week.
• This means that on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays the Academy Day would finish at 3:25pm. On a Tuesdays, the Academy Day would finish at 4:25pm.
• We will return to the pre-covid start of the day procedures with a warning bell at 8:40am and registration beginning at 8:45am

Should the changes be approved by the Academy’s Standards and Performance Committee and the Board of Trustees, they will come into force from 6 September 2021.

I appreciate that these changes may affect you in terms of childcare, but we believe that we need to adapt our school day if we are to continue to improve our support for your child’s education. I would like to invite you to give your feedback on our proposal by sending your responses to Nicki Maglione, Trust Communications Manager, via email to nicola.maglione@collegiateacademy.org.uk by Friday 23 July 2021 at 12pm, midday.

We will release the results of the consultation by 31 July 2021 in a letter and announcement to all families.

Yours sincerely,
Sir M Grundy
CEO Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust

Mr D Irish
Principal
