NEU Strike Action

January 2023

Dear Family

 NEU Teacher Strikes – Update

You may be aware from media coverage that teaching unions have declared strike action, which will take place on 1 February, 1 March, 15 March and 16 March. The strikes are happening because of a national dispute between the unions and the government, and not because of any issues at our school.

I’m sorry to inform you that Shireland Collegiate Academy will now be closed on Wednesday, 1 February. It became clear that we were going to be unable to provide the required levels of cover to safely have students attend the academy. Therefore, we are asking you not to send your child into school on this day.

We have not taken this decision lightly. We remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our pupils and feel that we would be unable to provide safe supervision with the staff we have available.

During this period, your child will learn online, following our comprehensive learning plan. We will contact you to let you know what your child needs to do to access this.

We are open for children of key workers and vulnerable children. If your child is eligible to attend, please click the LINK to register your child for this provision. There is no need to complete this form again if you have already done so.

If your child is eligible for free school meals, your child will be sent home with a grab bag from the canteen today.

I’m sory that you will have to make alternative arrangements for your child at short notice, and that they will experience disruption to their education. I understand that this situation may be frustrating and ask that all members of our school community continue to treat each other with respect.

We are working closely with our staff union representatives to keep up to date with the situation, and I will inform you as soon as possible if arrangements change further.

If you have any questions, please contact the Academy on 0121 558 8086 or alternatively via email info@collegiateacademy.org.uk

Yours sincerely

Mr D Irish

Principal
