Year 8 students Rokhaya, Haajar and Seher have made it to the Apps for Good 2023 Showcase finals with their innovative app, ‘Sanitary’.
The app aims to address period poverty and improve access to essential products and resources for young women and girls across the UK. As well as breaking down barriers and social stigmas surrounding periods, ‘Sanitary’ also provides educational resources and instructional videos which help educate young women on how to effectively use products.
By providing users with a designated barcode, users of the app can access free sanitary products from local shops and pharmacies by presenting this at checkout. The transactions are then tracked by affiliated charities supporting the app, which help cover the cost of the items. A list of establishments supporting this scheme can also be found via the app’s location service, ensuring convenience and availability no matter where users are.
Period poverty affects numerous young women in the UK, with insufficient access to basic, essential sanitary products. Affordability challenges persist for a significant number of young women, with a considerable portion having to rely on friends or improvised methods to meet their needs. A notable percentage of young women have also felt compelled to miss school days due to these circumstances.
You can help show your support for our students and their app by voting for ‘Sanitary’ on the Apps for Good website under the People’s Choice Award. The winners will be announced in Thursday 15th June, including the Judge’s Favourite, so make sure to cast your vote today and rally behind our talented students!
