Year 11 student, Karan Sahota, has achieved an amazing milestone by winning first place at the European Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Championships.
Competing under the Karkara club banner, Karan showcased exceptional skill, determination and composure against top athletes from across Europe. The victory marks a significant step in Karan’s rapidly rising martial arts career, one that began as a personal journey to rebuild confidence and resilience.
Since joining Karkara, Karan has competed in numerous Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, earning ten match victories and nine gold medals prior to the European title win. Her success is reflected by a rigorous training routine, attending training six days a week.
A spokesperson from Karkara said: “Karan’s gold medal wasn’t earned in six minutes. It was earned over years of hard work, discipline, persistence, and a willingness to learn. Her medal represents far more than personal achievement; she stands as a beacon of hope for the younger girls around her.
“Not only does Karan compete, but she also helps teach a weekend kids’ class. The inspiration she exudes for young girls is the true gold medal. Her achievements inspire the next generation of young girls in her community to become strong, confident, and self-reliant young women.”
Reflecting on her journey, Karan said: “When I started training, I never thought I’d be in the position I am today. I didn’t have a pleasant experience in my previous school and put all that negativity into training, and it has helped me regain my confidence and become the bubbly person I once was.
“I train six days a week because I enjoy it so much thanks to my coach, the people at training, and the support of my family. In the future, I want to compete in the adult World Championships, continue teaching kids MMA classes, and hopefully run girls-only Jiu-Jitsu classes to help other girls find something they enjoy.”
Thomas Daly, Principal at Shireland Collegiate Academy, said: “This is a testament not only to Karan’s remarkable talent and dedication but also to the resilience and determination that we encourage in all our students.
“Karan has turned a challenging personal experience into a story of triumph, showing that with focus and support, anything is possible. Her success is a proud moment for our school and an inspiration to her peers. Congratulations Karan.”
Shireland Collegiate Academy celebrates Karan’s outstanding achievement and remains committed to recognising excellence both inside and outside the classroom.
