Sixth Form Students Explore Future in Engineering with NMITE

Students from Shireland Sixth Form took part in an innovative engineering workshop led by the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE). The session formed part of a growing collaboration between the Sixth Form and the university.

The workshop introduced students to the world of engineering and construction through practical, hands-on problem solving and real-world challenges. It also showcased NMITE’s new engineering pathway, which redefines what it means to study the subject at university.

Unlike traditional engineering degrees, NMITE’s pathway does not require students to have studied A level Maths or Physics. Instead, it is built around immersive, employer-engaged learning that ensures graduates are industry-ready, equipped with the practical skills and mindset demanded by the sector.

At Shireland, students experienced this unique approach firsthand. The session included a presentation on pathways into engineering, a guest student speaker sharing their person experiences studying at NMITE, and a practical coding and robotics workshop.

Working in teams, students participated in design and sustainability tasks that explored various engineering disciplines. They also learned how NMITE is partnering with over 80 industry leaders — including JCB, Balfour Beatty, and Octopus Energy — to develop agile, creative engineers equipped to solve the world’s most pressing challenges.

Ben Brogan, Head of Sixth Form at Shireland Collegiate Academy, said: “We are always seeking new opportunities for our students, with NMITE’s innovative degree pathway opening an exciting route into engineering.

“It was inspiring to see our students realise they can shape the future and make a difference, regardless of the subjects they’ve studied so far – something that closely aligns with our values here at Shireland. We’re very grateful to NMITE for sharing their insights and connecting our students to such a valuable opportunity. We look forward to more collaborative opportunities in the future.”

Based in Hereford, NMITE reimagines engineering education by focusing on hands-on, small group learning rather than traditional lectures and exams. Students work closely with employers on real world problems, gaining not only a degree but also the experience, confidence and practical skills to thrive in their careers from day one.

This collaboration reflects Shireland Sixth Form’s mission to provide its students with access to the most relevant and up to date opportunities and developments. Whether aiming for university, apprenticeships or direct employment, Shireland is committed to helping every student find a pathway that suits their interests, strengths and aspirations.

As NMITE offers direct entry, current year 13 students can still apply for September 2025 entry at nmite.ac.uk
