Shireland students take on outdoor challenges at Frank Chapman residential

Students from Shireland Collegiate Academy spent two days at the Frank Chapman Outdoor Education Centre in Bewdley as part of an outdoor learning residential designed to build confidence, resilience and teamwork.

The trip formed part of the Academy’s wider enrichment and personal development curriculum, which uses experiences beyond the classroom to support students in building and developing their character and independence alongside their studies.

Students took part in a range of activities including bushcraft, archery, high ropes and guided walks. Each activity was structured to encourage problem solving, communication and peer support, with students required to work collaboratively in unfamiliar environments.

Set within 90 acres of ancient woodland, the Frank Chapman Centre delivers residential outdoor education programmes for schools, with activities taking place in a natural environment intended to support collaboration, independence and problem-solving.

Thomas Daly, Principal at Shireland Collegiate Academy, said: “Experiences like this are an important part of our curriculum and help students develop the habits and attributes that underpin success at school. When students are asked to work together under pressure, solve problems without immediate answers and keep going when things feel difficult, they build resilience and independence that supports their learning in the classroom and beyond.

“We’re very proud of how they approached the residential, supported one another and represented the academy throughout.

The Academy said it looks forward to providing more opportunities similar to this in the future as part of its commitment to supporting students’ personal development.
