Shireland Collegiate Academy Launches Basketball Training Programme with Birmingham Rockets

Shireland Collegiate Academy is excited to announce the launch of an innovative basketball training programme for its sixth form students. Developed in partnership with Birmingham Rockets as part of their Schools Programme, this initiative aims to provide opportunities for student athletes to excel both on and off the court.

As part of the Academy’s post-16 provision, the programme’s key features include structured team and individual practice sessions, strength and conditioning training and video analysis aimed at honing players’ skills and performance.

Complementing the physical training are workshops covering leadership, strategic thinking, nutrition, psychology and mental wellbeing, ensuring a well-rounded education. Students will also have opportunities to compete in weekly basketball games, gaining valuable experience in competitive sports.

Ben Brogan, Assistant Principal and Head of Sixth Form at Shireland Collegiate Academy, said: “We are thrilled to introduce this amazing training programme in partnership with the Birmingham Rockets. Since becoming a Rockets Basketball Hub in 2023, we’ve seen great success among our students who have benefitted from this provision in all aspects of their education.

“Extending this to our sixth form, we aim to offer a unique sports programme that integrates specialist coaching and complements students’ studies, enhancing their athletic, personal and academic development overall. This incredible opportunity will empower our students to achieve their sporting goals and excel in all aspects of life, especially those looking to pursue a professional sports related career.”

This new development of the partnership is set to elevate basketball training and development in schools, paving the way for the next generation of sporting professionals.

Robert Palmer, CEO of Birmingham Rockets, said: “We are pleased to have formed a unique and successful partnership with Shireland Academy, providing students with a comprehensive, high-level basketball programme within the school, whilst developing a community-based Rockets Satellite club in west Birmingham.

This new initiative will further enhance the sport in school and the local community, enabling local talent to further access Rockets’ expertise.”

Since partnering in 2023, Shireland Collegiate Academy and Birmingham Rockets have offered numerous opportunities for students and the wider Smethwick community. As an affiliated school partner, the Academy benefits from the Rockets’ expertise, with over 150 students currently participating in weekly basketball activities and games, a number expected to grow as the partnership continues to flourish.
