Year 12 students at Shireland Collegiate Academy received an inspiring insight into leadership and social impact from Mark Russell, CEO of The Children’s Society, who shared his personal journey in leadership and the charity’s transformative work.
The visit, arranged by Speakers for Schools, provided a unique opportunity for students to hear from an influential leader and learn about the impact of social justice work and the pathways to a meaningful career in the charity sector.
Russell, who has been a CEO of social justice charities since 2006, shared his extensive experience in leading organisations through periods of change. Passionately committed to working with diverse and inclusive teams, he rooted his leadership journey in his early work as a community youth worker. This background has shaped his commitment to real local community action and social impact. In addition to his role at The Children’s Society, Russell also serves as the Vice Chair of Governors at his local high school and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts.
During his talk, Russell emphasised the importance of resilience, ambition, and the power of making a difference.
The session also highlighted the vital work of The Children’s Society, a national charity dedicated to supporting young people facing abuse, exploitation, and neglect. With a legacy of over 140 years, the organisation continues to advocate for the social changes necessary to ensure every child has a brighter, hopeful future.
Ben Brogan, Head of Sixth Form at Shireland Collegiate Academy, commented: “It was an absolute privilege to host Mark Russell for our year 12 students and we are incredibly grateful to him for sharing his expertise. His story is a powerful reminder that leadership is about more than just authority – it’s about service, integrity, and creating real change.
“I hope our students walked away with a deeper understanding of what it takes to lead with purpose and how they, too, can have a positive impact on the world around them. I would also like to thank Speakers for Schools for arranging this amazing opportunity.”
