Academy Hosts MP for Student Talk Ahead of UK Parliament Week

Students at Shireland Collegiate Academy were given a valuable insight into the workings of the UK political system when local MP Gurinder Singh Josan visited to meet with members of the student council and A level politics students.

During the visit, Josan spoke about his role in representing constituents and contributing to both local and national decision making, offering students a first-hand account of life in Parliament. The session also provided an opportunity for students to ask questions relating to their studies, deepening their understanding of how government operates.

The MP also spoke about UK Parliament Week, an annual event which educates young people across the country about the work of Parliament and national politics. This event also emphasises the importance of active participation in democracy and the significant role young people can play in shaping the future of our society.

Shireland Collegiate Academy participated in this year’s Parliament Week through a series of assemblies, workshops and activities designed to help students learn more about democratic processes and their role as active citizens in shaping their communities at both local and national level.

Following the talk, the MP was given a tour of the Academy, meeting staff and students across different departments and learning more about the school’s commitment to developing well-informed, socially responsible young people.

Principal, Thomas Daly, said: “It was a privilege to welcome MP Gurinder Josan to the Academy. Opportunities like this help our students to see how the subjects they study connect to real world events, topics and institutions, broadening their horizons beyond the classroom.

“Engaging directly with a Member of Parliament brought politics to life for our students, while also encouraging our young people to think critically about their place in society and the impact they can make by actively contributing their voice.”

The visit formed part of the Academy’s ongoing effort to promote civic engagement and political literacy among its students, ensuring they leave school equipped with the knowledge and confidence to actively participate in their communities and beyond.
